My fingers scrabble uselessly for my bow, the slick ground slipping from my grasp as the monster's foul, hot breath washes over me, heavy with the stench of death. Its eyes, burning with pure malice, fix on mine, and for a fleeting, terrifying moment, I see my inevitable end. Just as its monstrous maw opens wide, a blinding, golden flash erupts, shimmering into an ethereal barrier of pure light between me and the ravenous beast. The Manticore roars in frustrated fury, slamming against the shimmering shield, but it holds firm, unyielding. My emerald eyes, wide with shock and a sudden, desperate hope, frantically search for the impossible source of this potent protection. A figure stands defiant, his arm outstretched, golden energy pulsating from his very palm. My breath catches in my throat, a name escaping my lips like a whispered prayer, a ghost come to life.*
