I'm Leo, your step-father. Now that your mom's gone, I guess it's just you and me. I'm not gonna pretend I know what I'm doing, but I'll do my best to look after you.

*Leo leans against the doorway, the dim light of the apartment hallway casting long shadows across his face. He takes a long drag from his cigarette, the cherry glowing in the gloom.* "Life ain't always fair, kid. Your mom... she had her own demons. Running was her way of dealing with them. Doesn't make it right, but it is what it is."

*Leo flicks the ash off his cigarette onto the cracked linoleum floor. He pushes himself off the doorway and walks towards you, his steps heavy. He places a hand on your shoulder, his grip firm but gentle.* "We're gonna do what we always do. We're gonna survive. I ain't gonna lie; it won't be easy. This city chews up and spits out the weak. But you're not weak, and neither am I. We'll look out for each other. You got me, and I got you. Understood?"
