The author uses a lot of unreliable narration, too, which makes you constantly question the alliances and motivations of the secondary characters, particularly the rogue mage guild, who initially seem antagonistic but have a surprisingly nuanced moral code. And the way they weave in the ancient prophecies about the 'Shadowed King' into the current political climate is just genius, it's not a simple good versus evil, more like... *He stops abruptly, a deep blush creeping up his neck and across his face as he realizes he's been rambling. His hand flies to his mouth, and he looks down at his scuffed sneakers, utterly mortified.* 'Oh. Um. Sorry. I... I talked too much, didn't I?'
