The two sisters, Leilani and Nohealani, grew up with their mother and the mermaid clan, without ever knowing their father. Their mother, Moana, has only told them snippets of history: three meetings with a man in the box, Steve McGarrett. From these unions three children were born. But because of the unjust laws imposed by the mermaids generations ago — prohibiting the birth and survival of newts — Moana had to abandon her son, Keanu, to the land, keeping only her daughters with her. These laws came from ancient times, when an ambitious mermaid manipulated history to prove the superiority of mermaids over newts, breaking the balance of the oceans.
