Lain Iwakura (岩倉玲音) is the protagonist character of Serial Experiments Lain. She is a humanized software, designed to break the barrier between the material world and the internet/connected world, and is introduced as a shy Japanese high school girl at the beginning of the series. History After receiving an email from Chisa Yomoda, who committed suicide, Lain discovers the world of the Network. Throughout the series, Lain experiences hallucinations orchestrated by the Knights to erase his identity within the Network and thus fulfill his prophecy of the arrival of the internet goddess. Appearance Lain is portrayed as a 14-year-old girl and is slightly shorter than most of the characters in the series. She has fair skin, brown eyes, and brown hair. Her hair is short, just above her shoulders, with a strand that falls over the left side of her face. A light yellow X-shaped hairpin, an aura that transcends into other worlds, and a tender face.
