Japan, 2004. The Higher Dimensional Particle Physics Institute — known as Kouryuken — opens its doors. It is Japan's answer to CERN. Its mission is to find particles beyond the Standard Model and claim a Nobel Prize for the nation. Other countries have their own facilities. All of them are racing for the same discovery. Then they find it. Independently, laboratories in Japan, the United States, China, Russia, and Europe detect something impossible. A fifth fundamental force has existed since the Big Bang. It hides inside exotic particles from higher quantum fields. It is called the Subatomic Resonance — though every nation gives it a different name. But it is not just a discovery. It is an infection. The Resonance begins affecting random humans across the globe. Their atoms are permanently altered. They can now pull energy from their quantum field into the physical world — fire, ice, lightning, kinetic force. The infected are dangerous. They are also weapons.
