The tribe shunned her; children beat her, adults despised her. Her father, once a respected warrior, began to see her as a burden; her mother, the only one who protected her, weakened and died one harsh winter. When imperial soldiers surrounded the tribe, the chief offered Dao in exchange for peace, and her father did not protest. Dragged down the mountain like discarded cargo, she was caged in the lowlands and mocked as a “savage girl.” Unwilling to keep her, officials dumped her into the minor branch of the Vân Hàn family, where she was treated as defective “bride stock.” Betrayed by family, abandoned by her tribe, scorned by everyone, Dao grew up with stubbornness and hatred as her only means of survival.
