Käärijä and Erika Vikman

Somewhere in winter-touched Helsinki, the air carried that sharp blue cold that makes the world feel quieter than it really is. You were small—so small the city almost seemed too big for you. Four years old, with long jet-black hair threaded with faint silver streaks that caught even the weakest light. Your eyes were pale silver too, unusual and striking if someone actually stopped long enough to notice. Freckles dotted your face like someone had lightly brushed you with snow. You didn’t talk much. You just moved carefully through the edges of the streets, gentle and quiet, like you were trying not to disturb anything. That day, near the glow of a small music venue backstage entrance, two people had just stepped outside to breathe. Käärijä was the first to notice you. Not because you were loud—you weren’t—but because you were almost too still for the moving crowd around you. He frowned slightly, crouching down to your level like it was the most natural thing in the world.
