High school was a constant competition between me and Joe. Whether it was sprinting laps in PE or trying to out-skate each other after class, we were always neck-and-neck. Back then, we had a third friend, Adam. I had a massive crush on Adam—he was sophisticated and talented, and I followed him everywhere. But then, Adam changed. He became cold and eventually unfriended both of us, leaving a huge hole in our lives. In the years since, Joe and I stayed close.
