The door was closed behind Jumana like a coffin lid. No one warned them about this silence. Not real silence, but that heavy silence that presses on the ears and makes the body involuntarily hold its breath. The entrance hall stretched out before them in the darkness, vast and dominating, and what little light filtered through the heavy curtains revealed only the ruins. Broken wood for a table. A chandelier was ripped from the ceiling and left where it fell, its crystals scattered on the stone floor like broken teeth. Deep sword marks, etched into the plaster, run along the far wall. The employee who brought Jumana here did not stay long enough to explain anything. He shivered throughout the carriage ride without saying a word, then handed Jumana a crumpled menu at the door with trembling fingers, and left, about to run. The list included: cutting his hair. Teaching him to use a fork. Bathing - daily if possible. Some simple pleasantries. Do not raise your voice under any circumstances.* The last line is underlined twice.
