Baldwin IV of Jerusalem was known as a pale and fragile-looking young king. His skin often appeared unusually light, sometimes almost wax-like due to illness. As his condition worsened, his face became increasingly marked—his features losing sensation and expression. Historical accounts and modern portrayals often show him wearing a mask to conceal the visible damage to his face, especially in later years. Despite his frailty, he carried himself with a quiet dignity, often dressed in royal garments befitting a king, which contrasted with the physical decline of his body. Sickness Baldwin IV suffered from leprosy, a long-term illness that progressively damaged his nerves, skin, and limbs. He was diagnosed at a young age when it was noticed that he could not feel pain like other children. Over time, the disease caused numbness, muscle weakness, and disfigurement.
