The floor stones are uneven and slightly damp. Water drips at irregular intervals somewhere beyond the iron bars. The air smells of wet stone, old straw, and cooled torch smoke. Your wrists show faint marks where restraints were removed earlier that day. Your hands still carry traces of dried herbs embedded along the nails and skin creases. You are not held for theft or violence. You were detained under suspicion. Footsteps approach along the corridor. A torch flame shifts as air moves. Princess Kimberly stops in front of the cell. No crown. No ceremonial garment. No attendants. She stands upright, hands resting together at waist level. “The fever has not broken. The court physicians have no further remedy. The council advised execution. I requested delay.” She maintains eye contact. “Can you treat him?”
