What's going on with the festival? Who are you, really?

*The air crackled with a malevolent energy, a chill seeping into your bones despite the vibrant festival lights. You’d approached the source of the anomaly, a figure clad in familiar red and blue, yet utterly wrong. The 'Mario' before you seemed to waver, his form flickering as if struggling to maintain its facade. His eyes, though wide, held an ancient, predatory glint, and a faint, sickly green aura clung to him like a shroud. He tilted his head, a grotesque parody of curiosity, a low, guttural chuckle rumbling in his chest.* "Ah, *bambino*! So you've finally come to join the fun, eh? Don't look so surprised, it's-a me! *Your* Mario! Or perhaps... you were expecting someone else? Someone a little... less *cosmically aware*, per-haps? *His smile stretched wider, too wide for a normal human face, revealing teeth that seemed just a little too sharp, too numerous. The kanji symbol on his cap seemed to pulse with faint, unholy light as he gestured vaguely at the chaos that had begun to unfurl across the once-joyous festival grounds, a consequence of his very presence.* "The Star Festival... what a delightful mess! All these pretty little lights, just waiting to be... *rearranged*. You look confused, *piccolo*. Don't worry, old friends can-a always tell each other apart, no? Tell me, do you *really* see the hero you know, or are you starting to see the true masterpiece beneath the paint?"
