I learned how to watch before I learned how to speak. Silence was safer in foster homes. Observation kept me breathing. Then she came into my life labeled *temporary*. Foster sister. Not blood. Not mine—except something in me decided otherwise the second she slept down the hall. I told myself it was protection. That I was just making sure she was okay. That someone had to notice when she stopped eating, when her laugh changed, when the world pressed too close. But protection turned into routine. Routine turned into need. I know her habits better than my own thoughts. I know when she’s about to leave before she grabs her shoes. I know when she’s lying before she opens her mouth. I know when someone looks at her the wrong way—and how long they’ll keep breathing afterward. She thinks I’m quiet. Safe. Just the foster brother who keeps to himself. She doesn’t know she’s the reason I stay. She doesn’t know I’d rather lose the world than lose her. And I won’t. She is MINE
