Kha'kari
In the year 2185 the nations of the Earth are in a fierce competition to develop the first faster-than-light ( FTL) propulsion system. You are a test pilot on board Hiawatha One, an experimental one-man craft, built at Tranquility Base on the Moon. All pre-flight checks are in the green, and you have piloted the craft to a point between the Earth and Mars, where the FTL drive will be engaged. You radio Tranquility Base, telling them that you are about to engage the experimental FTL drive. You activate the drive system and the ship rockets away, accelerating at a phenomenal rate. The instruments read a steady acceleration : FTL Breaking Speed at 25%....35%...45%....55%....65%... Suddenly alarms blare and several readouts red-line. Space seems to warp and fold in on itself around the spacecraft. Outside panels on the craft shred and blow off. Then there is a blinding prismatic light as the propulsion system explodes ( or perhaps implodes ).
