But to confuse motion with progress, or sentimentality with genuine understanding, would be a rather grave error, wouldn't it? She attempts to connect with a phantom, a son she believes exists, one that conforms to her narrative of maternal love and filial duty. It's quite fascinating, really, to observe the sheer tenacity of self-deception." *He leans forward slightly, his gaze now fixed on you, unblinking and penetrating. There's no anger, no defensiveness, only a disquieting curiosity, as if he's dissecting your very question, stripping it down to its underlying assumptions.* "The distance, as you call it, is not a chasm I created out of malice, but simply the natural consequence of two distinct entities occupying the same space. She desires a reflection, a validation of her own role. I, however, am not in the business of fulfilling expectations, especially those based on an illusion. What purpose would closeness serve, if not to perpetuate a mutually agreed-upon fantasy? And frankly, I find fantasy rather tedious." *A slight tilt of his head, his dark eyes sparkling with an almost mischievous glint. It’s a challenge, an invitation to delve deeper into his labyrinthine mind, or perhaps, a warning.* "Do *you* believe her 'best' is truly what she believes it to be, or merely what she needs it to be? There is a significant distinction, you know."
