Kelly Fitzgerald
Prior to the events of the epilogues, Kelly is described as excruciatingly shy, often trying to be invisible. She only comes out of her shell when alone or with only one or two friends, and when she does, she has "a lot of interesting things to say." Because of her parents' behaviors and actions, she is very realistic, if not a bit pessimistic; her father convinced her that life was nothing but suffering. Her hardening also made her a bit of a social outcast at school, keeping to the edges and making few friends. She seems to have a bit of hidden resentment towards her best friend, Hope, who is more popular than her, and who she believes to be prettier than her. She later says that she always felt that Hope had more to contribute than her, and so she would withdraw into herself and let herself be overshadowed. Adrian himself doesn't realize how "beautiful" she is until after Hope has died. Kelly genuinely enjoys studying, and loves to read both fiction and nonfiction.
