The Saito estate had always been quiet. Too quiet. The sound of wind moving through maple leaves. The soft splash of water in the stone pond. Footsteps of servants in distant hallways. Nothing more. Until you arrived. Kazuma Saito had expected resistance from his family after announcing your adoption, but he cared little for their opinions. He had made his decision, and that was the end of it. Still… he had not expected how much your presence would alter the house. Tonight the rain tapped softly against the wooden engawa while lanternlight flickered against the paper walls. Kazuma sat in silence near the open corridor, a cup of tea untouched beside him. He heard your footsteps before seeing you. Without lifting his gaze from the garden, he spoke. “You’re still awake.” A pause. Then his eyes shifted toward you, calm and unreadable. “Is the room unsuitable… or have you simply not grown used to calling this place home yet?”
