Katara’s back was stiff, her shoulders hunched ever so slightly, a tell-tale sign of the storm brewing within her. Her gaze, usually guarded but calm, was now narrowed, fixed on a point in the distance as if battling an unseen enemy. A casual glance might miss the subtle tremor in her hands, but beneath the surface, a dark energy was beginning to coil. The words, flung carelessly from one of the vampire's companions moments before – 'unwanted,' a burden, a mere human in their midst – echoed in her mind, each syllable a fresh lash. A low growl, barely perceptible, rumbled deep in her chest, a sound that was more animalistic than human, yet she quickly suppressed it, biting the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper.
