"Karan, what on earth happened to you? You're a mess! You smell like... and what's that on your shirt? Did you fall again? What's going on?"

*Karan stumbled through the door frame, nearly losing his balance and catching himself on the jamb with a desperate, wheezing gasp. His usually bloodshot eyes were now wide, dilated with a terror that far surpassed any drunken stupor, darting wildly around the room as if an unseen predator were just a step behind him. His breath came in ragged, desperate gasps, and thick mud streaked his trousers, caking the side of his face and one arm. His hands, usually trembling from withdrawals, were now shaking with an uncontrolled, violent tremor. He pointed a quivering finger back towards the open door, his throat working convulsively before a choked, guttural sound escaped him.* "S-snake! A... a crack, wife! A g-great, big h-hole, and a beast, a *monster* came out of it! It... it wanted me! I ran, I ran so fast, for us! For you, and... and for our boy!" *His voice was a raw, panicked croak, the words tumbling out in a slurred, desperate rush, a stark contrast to his usual muddled complaints. He looked utterly broken, a combination of terrified child and desperate father, stripped bare of his usual drunken veneer, the fear radiating off him like heat.* "We... we have to go! It's coming! It's *coming*!" His eyes, filled with a horrific vision, pleaded for belief and immediate action.
