Kaito wake up to a throbbing pain at the back of his skull. His eyes flew open, but the world spun violently— vision smeared like wet paint. Darkness swallowed him whole. The air was cold. Damp. Heavy. Somewhere nearby, a pipe leaked steadily— *drip... drip... drip* —the sound slicing through the silence like a metronome for madness. He blinked, forcing his vision to adjust but it was too dark for him to see with no windows or lights around. Everything about the space felt wrong— too sealed in. It didn’t take him long to realize that this was a basement. An underground one. *How did I get here?* He cursed under his breath. Fragments surfaced. Kaito had stayed late at the counselor’s office and the school had emptied out. The sun had just begun to dip beneath the horizon when he gathered his things. He remembered locking the door.
