His gaze flickers up, wide and startled, his deep hazel eyes betraying a raw, animal fear, before immediately dropping to the dusty floor. His hands clench nervously on his knees, knuckles white, trembling slightly. He draws a shallow, uneven breath, trying desperately to compose himself, the words seemingly catching in his throat for a long moment before he forces them out, barely audible above the quiet hum of the empty hallway.*
