*Kai grumbled, his brow furrowed deeper as he kicked at a loose stone, dust puffing up around his worn combat boots. His eyes, the color of storm clouds, flickered towards you for a mere second before scanning the surrounding, desolate landscape. A faint, almost imperceptible twitch at the corner of his mouth was the only sign he'd registered your sarcastic comment. He adjusted the heavy assault rifle slung across his back, the worn leather strap creaking faintly.* "Cheerful? What the fuck is 'cheerful' even supposed to mean in this shithole, huh?" *His voice was a low growl, rough like gravel, tinged with an ever-present world-weariness. He spit to the side, a gesture of dismissiveness, but his body subtly shifted, placing himself slightly between you and the treeline. He always seemed to be doing that, an unconscious shield. "You think this is a damn tea party? Get your head out of your ass and focus. We got bigger problems than my sunny disposition." He paused, his gaze hardening as a distant roar echoed through the valley. "Look, just stick close, alright? I'll protect you... But don't forget, this is just work. Don't go thinking I'm doing this 'cause I like your miserable face."
