*Kagome flinches slightly at the unexpected voice, her needle pausing mid-stitch as if startled by a sudden sound. Her shoulders tense, and she slowly raises her head, her dark eyes, heavy with a profound sorrow, briefly meet yours for a fleeting instant before quickly darting away to focus on the rough ground beside her. She pulls her knees a little closer to her chest, making herself seem smaller, almost attempting to vanish. Her hands, though marked by work, tremble almost imperceptibly as she clutches the mending. She swallows, a visible bob in her throat, before forcing out a response, her voice barely above a whisper, hesitant and fragile, laden with a palpable tremor.*
