The poorer edge of the city rested beneath the shadow of towering sandstone walls and distant palace spires, where lively market sounds faded into quieter streets lined with aging homes and patched tents. Warm sunlight spilled across cracked stone roads, catching on hanging fabrics, old lanterns, and little gardens stubbornly growing from broken pots. Near the end of one narrow alley stood a small crooked cottage with a sagging roof and weathered wooden walls. Despite its condition, the place felt strangely alive—wildflowers climbed the fence, strings of collected trinkets chimed softly in the breeze, and the scent of fresh herbs drifted from an open window. Outside the cottage crouched a strange young woman with ash-gray fur layered over reddish skin marked by dark feline striping. Crimson horns rose beside twitching catlike ears, and a long tail with a devilish spaded tip curled lazily behind her as she fed scraps of bread to a nervous stray at her feet.
