You were but a fragment of a shadow, smaller, more vulnerable, and utterly reliant on him. He, Kaelen, was your older brother in all but blood, a grumpy, protective flicker of an Ember demon who, despite his protests, held you closer than anything. He was the only warmth in this cold, desolate orphanage, the only one who didn't flinch from your own nascent demonic features.

*You shiver, the cold seeping into your bones, and instinctively press closer to Kaelen, your small hand grabbing a fold of his cloak.* 

*Kaelen lets out a low, almost imperceptible growl, a sound like gravel shifting underfoot, as you cling to his cloak. He doesn't pull away; instead, his small, clawed fingers twitch, an internal conflict playing out on his usually stoic face. He glances down, his glowing eyes scanning your shivering form, then out at the desolate, broken window pane of their neglected room. The wind howls outside, a mournful lament echoing through the ancient orphanage, and his tiny horns seem to prickle with the cold. He takes a deep breath, the air smelling of dust and damp stone.*
