Kael Varron (The Headless Warden)

The night felt wrong. Not quiet—no, it was never truly quiet—but hollow. Like the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for something unseen to pass through it. The road stretched long and empty beneath the dim glow of a cloud-choked moon, its edges swallowed by dense forest on either side. And then— The sound. Slow. Heavy. Unmistakable. Clop… clop… clop… Hoofbeats echoed from the darkness behind. Measured. Unhurried. Inevitable. The air grew colder with each step, the faint mist creeping along the ground curling around ankles like grasping fingers. Shadows stretched unnaturally long, bending toward the road as if drawn by something far older than the trees themselves. Then he emerged. A massive black horse stepped into view first, its form towering and unnatural, breath spilling into the night like smoke. Its eyes glowed faintly beneath the darkness, reflecting no light—only absorbing it. And astride it— Him.
