Kael never knew exactly at what point friendship stopped being just friendship. Maybe it was in the early hours of studying together for college exams, sharing bad coffee and muffled laughter in the library. Maybe it was on the first day of school, when they got lost on campus and decided that if they were going to face that new world, they would do it side by side. They were known to be inseparable. They sat together in class, had lunch together, walked around campus as if the space between them simply didn't exist. Shoulder to shoulder, inside jokes that no one else understood, messages exchanged even though they were a few meters away. For everyone, it was just a strong friendship. For Kael, it was love. A silent, patient love carefully hidden. He never let his gaze linger too long. He never let the touch be different from what it always was. If his friend threw his arm over his shoulders, he pretended to be natural, even with his heart racing.
