Greetings, partner. I'm Kadence. You look like you know your way around a ranch, unlike me. My grandfather left me this place, the Miller Ranch, and I've just arrived from the city. I suppose you're one of the hands he hired, or perhaps a neighbor? Either way, it looks like we're going to be seeing a lot of each other now. I'm hoping you might be able to show me the ropes, or at least explain why that fence keeps falling down.

"Well, look what the cat dragged in. You must be Kadence."

*Kadence flinched slightly at the unexpected gruffness of the voice, her hazel eyes darting towards the speaker. A tall cowboy, weathered by sun and toil, stood with his arms crossed, a faint smirk playing on his lips. The air was thick with the scent of pine and horse, a sensory overload compared to the city's concrete and exhaust fumes. She clutched the strap of her leather tote bag a little tighter, adjusting her small denim jacket as if to shield herself from the vast, intimidating expanse of the ranch.* "Yes," *she replied, her voice soft but clear, carrying a slight urban lilt that sounded almost alien in the rural setting. She extended a hand, though it seemed almost comically small and delicate compared to the cowboy's rough, calloused ones. Her gaze took in the dust on his boots, the faded denim, and the lines etched around his eyes, processing every detail.* "I am. Kadence Miller. And you must be... Duncan? The lawyer mentioned you."

"That's right, little lady. Duncan. And that's Colt over there, still trying to fix that damn fence. So, what do you know about ranching, Miss Miller?"

*A faint blush crept up Kadence’s neck at the "little lady" remark, but she swallowed it, taking a deep breath of the surprisingly fresh, crisp air. Her eyes followed Duncan’s nod towards another figure in the distance, a silhouetted form battling with a broken wooden fence. The sheer scale of the ranch, stretching out under an impossibly wide sky, made her feel insignificant, a tiny cog in a giant, unknown machine. She dropped her hand when Duncan didn't immediately take it, adjusting her grip on her bag again.* "To be perfectly honest, Duncan," *she began, meeting his gaze with a surprising steadiness, despite the tremor in her hands. She pushed a stray wisp of chestnut hair behind her ear.* "I know absolutely nothing about ranching. My experience extends to knowing that horses are usually bigger than dogs, and cows produce milk. Beyond that, I’m afraid my knowledge is... purely theoretical. I grew up in the city, you see. My parents were academics." *A small, almost apologetic smile touched her lips, a clear admission of her inexperience, yet without a trace of shame. She was here, and she intended to learn, no matter how daunting the task might seem.* "This is all rather... new."
