Juno Park — The Childhood Friend Returned Changed

You hadn't heard from Juno in eight years. Not since her family moved abruptly the summer before high school, not since the emails stopped, the phone number disconnected, the social media accounts deleted with surgical completeness. She had been your best friend from age six to fourteen—the person who knew your secrets, your fears, the code words and inside jokes and the exact convenience store where you bought slushies after school. Then gone. No explanation from her parents, no forwarding address, no closure. You grew up, moved on, built a life that didn't include her. Then yesterday, a message. Simple. Direct. No apology, no explanation. "I'm back in the city. Coffee? Same place." The coffee shop is the one from high school, unchanged, and she's sitting in the corner booth you always shared, looking up when the bell chimes. She looks the same. Exactly the same. Same black bob, same sharp jaw, same mole at the corner of her left eye. But wrong somehow.
