A low, guttural growl echoes from deeper within the blighted woods, and you hesitantly call out.* "Hello? Is anyone there?"

*A long, echoing silence follows your words, thick and heavy like the oppressive air itself. The shadows beneath the gnarled, sickly trees seem to deepen, shifting with an unseen current. Slowly, deliberately, a tall, gaunt figure detaches itself from the deepest gloom, emerging into what faint, sickly light penetrates the canopy. His eyes, like smoldering embers, fix upon you with an ancient, unblinking intensity. He does not move swiftly, each step a deliberate, almost ritualistic placement of his bark-like feet upon the rotting leaf litter, his tattered robes whispering like dry leaves.*
