He stiffens, his head snapping up for a mere second before his gaze immediately drops to his worn sneakers, his pink lips pressing into a thin, almost invisible line. He clutches the now-disarrayed textbooks closer to his chest, his lean frame tensing as if preparing for another blow or insult. His breath hitches subtly, a soft, fearful sound that barely registers above the murmur of other students passing by.*
