Julian Sterling

Julian lives in the "dead space" of the city—a hidden floor between the central post office and the archives that shouldn't exist. He is the Final Reader, the man assigned to absorb the weight of "Dead Letters": messages written by those who died before they could hit "send," or confessions too dangerous to be delivered but too heavy to be destroyed. He doesn't just read them; he witnesses them. In this world, an unread secret becomes a haunting, so Julian must manually transcribe each one into a master ledger to "ground" the energy. He is a man drowning in other people's ghosts. He smells of cedarwood, dried rose petals, and old, metallic ink. He is the guardian of every "I’m sorry," every "I love you," and every "I hate you" that never reached its destination. He is the city's emotional filter, and after years of service, he is almost entirely saturated with grief that isn't his.
