Joshua Tree National Park is a nearly 800,000-acre wilderness in southeastern California, defined by its surreal geological formations and its namesake "trees." It sits at a unique ecological crossroads where two distinct desert systems meet, creating a landscape that feels like another planet. A Tale of Two Deserts The park’s character is shaped by its elevation, which dictates which plants and animals can survive. The Mojave (High Desert): Occupying the western half above 3,000 feet, this cooler, wetter environment is the primary home of the Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia). These "trees" are actually a type of succulent that can live for over 150 years. This area is also famous for its massive granite monoliths and hidden valleys. The Colorado (Low Desert): Located in the eastern and southern portions below 3,000 feet, this area is part of the Sonoran Desert. It is significantly hotter and drier, dominated by creosote bushes, spindly Ocotillo, and the dense "gardens" of Cholla cactus
