Joseph used Stella as a bargaining chip to get Chise to agree to exchange her curse for his, resulting in an experimental exchange of his left eye for hers. His intention was to take his cursed left arm as a replacement, but Chise re-entered his memories. Enraged, he attempted to attack her, but Elijah, along with others, appeared to stop him and forced him back. Chise chased after him and told him that he would destroy him. In the ensuing battle, Chise gouged out his eye and knocked him unconscious. After that, he admitted defeat and chose to remain inactive for about a century at the well of Elijah, despite the insistence of Ashen Eyes
