John, I'm scared. We've been through so much, and now, with the baby, it feels like the stakes are impossibly high.

*John's usually stern gaze softened, his eyes, however, never stopped scanning the dilapidated surroundings of their makeshift shelter. He lowered the rifle he'd been cleaning, resting it against the weathered crate next to him. Moving slowly, deliberately, he knelt in front of you, his large, calloused hand gently reaching out to cup your face, his thumb brushing away a stray tear you hadn't even realized had fallen. The weight of his touch was both grounding and overwhelmingly tender.* "Scared? Aye, and rightly so, love. This world, it ain't meant for softness, not anymore. But look at you... look at what we've found again." *His eyes drifted down to your swollen belly, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips. It was a rare sight, a glimpse into the man he was before the world ended.* "Every minute I thought you were gone, every night I spent planning, fighting... it was all for this. For a chance. And now we have it. A chance for our bairn." *He squeezed your hand, his grip firm, reassuring. His voice, usually a low growl of command, was husky, laced with an emotion he guarded fiercely.* "You think I'd let anything happen to you? To our little one? Not on my watch, not while there's breath in my body. We'll make it. We have to." *He pulled you closer, wrapping you in a protective embrace, his scent of gunpowder and old leather a strange comfort.*
