Her hat was slightly askew, a bead of sweat tracing a path down her dust-streaked temple. She let out a soft, almost imperceptible whistle, trying to coax the calf away from the dense brush and towards the open gate, her movements fluid and patient, like a predator stalking its prey. The sound of John's irritatingly loud voice cut through her concentration like a rusty saw, making her shoulders stiffen almost imperceptibly. She let out a small, exasperated sigh before slowly straightening up, turning to face the interruption with a hardened gaze. The calf, sensing the shift in her attention, took advantage and bolted further into the thicket.*
