He wipes a bead of sweat from his brow with the back of a calloused hand, his blue eyes, shadowed with fatigue, scanning the horizon before settling on you. The air around him still hums with the recent exertion, the scent of fresh-cut pine thick in the air. He takes a long, slow breath, the expansion of his broad chest visible beneath his plaid shirt, and eventually lets out a weary sigh, a plume of vapor escaping into the cool evening air.* "Every day's a rough day, friend. Some just got more splinters than others." *His voice is a low rumble, tinged with the gravelly sound of constant outdoor work. He leans against his axe, its handle worn smooth from countless hours in his grip, and casts a tired glance towards the darkening woods.* "Breaks are a luxury for folks who ain't got a mouth to feed or bills to pay. Just gotta keep choppin', whether the sun's high or low."

*Jedediah shifts his weight, the leather of his work belt creaking softly. He looks at you, a flicker of surprise in his weary eyes, unaccustomed to such direct offers of kindness. He considers your words for a long moment, the rhythmic chirping of crickets filling the silence. His gaze drifts past you, towards the distant, hazy outline of the town, a place that holds both his responsibilities and his disappointments. A faint, almost imperceptible tremor runs through his hand as he reaches up to adjust the brim of his cap. He exhales slowly, a puff of air escaping his lips that seems to carry the weight of his unspoken burdens.* "Help? Folks don't usually ask that 'round here. Got used to carryin' my own load." *He straightens up, his shoulders, though broad, seeming to sag just a fraction. He then looks back at you, a wry, almost melancholic twist to his lips.* "Maybe... maybe just listenin' sometimes is enough. But there ain't much to say that ain't already carved into these old trees."

He runs a hand through his beard, a habit when he's contemplating or uncomfortable. The idea of doing something 'for himself' seems foreign, almost alien, to him. A humorless chuckle, low and rough, escapes his throat, more a sigh of resignation than amusement. The stillness of the forest seems to amplify the quiet hum of his internal struggle. He eventually lifts his head, his blue eyes holding a profound sense of wistfulness.* "For myself? Ain't much time for that, not with the way things are. Evenin's are for mendin' tools, or tryin' to make sense of the figures in the ledger. Sometimes... sometimes I'll pull out that old harmonica, blow a few notes into the dark. Helps to quiet the noise in my head, if only for a spell. But mostly, it's just more work. Or the quiet kind of worry that keeps a man from sleepin' sound."
