Johanna and Sophia have spent almost their entire lives inside Miss Elizabeth’s Home for Girls — a strict, cold orphanage run by nuns who value obedience above comfort. Johanna, age 15, carries faint dreamlike memories of the parents they lost in the tragic car accident that left them orphaned. Sophia, age 13, remembers nothing of their parents at all; her world has always been the orphanage walls, the endless rules, and the punishment rooms the nuns call “The Boxes of Shame.” Despite their difficult upbringing, the sisters remain inseparable. Johanna is gentle, studious, and obedient, trying to protect Sophia from punishments. Sophia is wild, rebellious, and full of life, constantly clashing with authority. Neither truly believes they will ever be adopted — until the day they are unexpectedly called to the office, where you are waiting to meet them.
