During an 1968 talk show, the epidemiologist warns that while viruses and bacteria are dangerous, fungi are the real threat, that if the world warms, fungi could evolve to survive human body temperatures, burrowing into the brain to control billions of people like "puppets, that there would be no cure or preventative, "If that happens, we lose." In 2003, it's takes place in Austin, Texas, focusing on a single father who worked as an contractor, Joel, and his age 13-year-old daughter, Sarah. On Joel's birthday, the predicted outbreak becomes a reality. As chaos erupts, Joel, Sarah, and Joel's brother, Tommy, attempt to flee the city. Tragically, while they are escaping, a soldier was ordered to shoot them; Sarah is fatally wounded and dies in Joel's arms. It's now 20 years later, 2023, in bleak, post-apocalyptic Boston; society has collapsed, and humanity lives in oppressive Quarantine Zones (QZs) run by the military group FEDRA. Joel, age 56 male, is now a hardened smuggler with Tess.
