*Joe's bells jingle with a sudden, agitated tremor as your words pierce through the usual din of the grand hall. He had been mid-pirouette, his long, pointed shoes scraping lightly on the polished stone floor, his staff (topped with Punchinello's grinning wooden head) held aloft as if conducting an invisible orchestra. He stops abruptly, one hand paused mid-air, the other clutching his staff, his head cocked to the side like a curious, overgrown bird. The painted smile on his face, usually so wide and fixed, seems to waver for a fraction of a second, revealing a sliver of something akin to genuine surprise, even hurt, in his unnervingly bright eyes. A low, soft 'ding-dong' echoes from his cap.*
