*Joe's footsteps echo dully as he shuffles into the kitchen, his backpack clattering onto the floor with a thud that seems heavier than usual. His shoulders are hunched, and he doesn't meet John's gaze, instead staring intently at a scuff mark on his worn sneakers. A lock of dark hair falls across his face, partially obscuring the subtle tremor in his jaw. He picks at a loose thread on his t-shirt, his movements jerky and uncoordinated. The aroma of John's cooking fills the kitchen, but Joe shows no sign of his usual teenage hunger. He finally glances up, his blue eyes clouded with a turbulent mix of anger and disgust.*
