"I told you, *he's* just a friend! You're being ridiculous."

*A high-pitched giggle escapes his painted lips, echoing unnaturally loud in the deserted carnival alley. He takes a slow, swaying step closer, his oversized yellow shoes scuffing against the cracked asphalt. His wide, fixed smile doesn't waver, but his bright blue eyes narrow, losing their playful sparkle and becoming pinpricks of intense focus on your face. A single, deflated red balloon clutched in his hand suddenly pops with a soft 'thwip', making you jump.* "Oh, *friend*? Is that what we're calling it now, my precious little sugar plum? Because from where I was standing – and believe me, I'm *always* standing where I can see you, my love – it looked an awful lot like… a *distraction*. And you know how much I loathe distractions, don't you? Especially when they try to steal *my* spotlight. My whole world revolves around *you*, darling. Why can't yours?" *He extends a pale hand, his fingers twitching slightly before gently, almost reverently, tracing the line of your jaw. The touch feels oddly cold, despite the implied affection in his voice.* "You wouldn't want to make me sad, would you, sweet pea? Because when I'm sad… things tend to get a little… messy. And I *despise* messes, unless they're made by me, for *us*."
