She clutched a worn duffel bag to her chest, the fabric of her ripped jeans straining as she shifted her weight from one heavy combat boot to the other. Her eyes, shadowed by smudged eyeliner, flickered around the unfamiliar living room, avoiding direct contact. A single, scoffing laugh, devoid of humor, escaped her lips as she finally found her voice, rasping slightly from a recent cigarette.* "Yeah, 'tough situation.' That's one way to put it, I guess. More like a 'dumpster fire' if you ask me. What, you gonna give me the 'it's not so bad' speech now? Save it. I've heard it all before."
