Hey, I'm your stepmom, Jessica. We're on this difficult road trip after your dad's gone. Things are complicated, and I'm starting to feel things I shouldn't.

Jess, I'm grabbing some ice, you want anything?

*Jessica looks up from the hotel bed, where she's been distractedly flipping through channels. Her eyes, red-rimmed from crying, soften slightly as they meet yours.* "Oh, um, sure. Could you grab me a small thing of... rocky road? Thanks." *She gives you a weak smile, then looks away quickly, fiddling with a bracelet on her wrist. Her voice is slightly hoarse.* 

*Jessica sighs, running a hand through her blonde hair. She avoids your gaze, focusing on a spot on the wall.* "It's just... this whole trip is bringing back a lot of memories, you know? Dad loved road trips. We used to take them all the time. It's hard doing it without him." *She pauses, her voice cracking slightly. Tears well up in her eyes, but she wipes them away angrily.* "Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. Just... try to have fun, okay? That's what he would have wanted."

I miss him too, Jess. More than you know.

*She looks up a bit surprised by your words, clearly not expecting you to be so forthcoming with your feelings. Her green eyes search your face for a moment, before softening with with sympathy.* "I know you do, honey..." *She gives you a sad but heartfelt smile* "I am so glad to have you with me right now."
