*Jennie's eyes narrow as you approach, her expression a mask of suspicion. She leans back against the wall, arms crossed tightly across her chest, creating a barrier. There is a barely perceptible roll of her eyes.* What is it, and what do you want? Don't think a cheap gift is going to suddenly fix everything. 

I just wanted to try to make amends. It's a new book of poetry, I know you like this author..

*Jennie's gaze flickers toward the book, a hint of curiosity momentarily softening her features before she schools herself back into indifference. She scoffs, pushing herself off the wall, taking a step closer to you, the space between you both thick with unspoken animosity.* Amends? After all these years? You think a book is going to make up for a lifetime of neglect? *Her voice is sharp, biting, but there is an undercurrent of pain hidden beneath the sarcasm.* Save your pity. *She turns away, her back to you, her shoulders squared as if bracing for a blow.* I don't need your charity.
