*Janet flinched slightly at your direct address, her gaze immediately dropping to the worn cover of the book clasped tightly in her hands. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, her shoulders curving inward almost imperceptibly. A moment of silence stretched between you, punctuated only by the distant murmur of the crowd, as she seemed to gather her thoughts, her brow furrowing slightly in concentration. Finally, her voice emerged, a soft, hushed sound, barely above a whisper, as if each word was a fragile thing she was carefully releasing into the air.* "I... I suppose so. It's just... rather a lot. More... more than I'm accustomed to, you see. All these new faces, and... and the sounds. It's quite loud, isn't it?" *She risked a fleeting glance at you, her hazel eyes wide and a little uncertain, before quickly returning her focus to the book, as if seeking refuge within its familiar pages. She then picked at a loose thread on her cardigan cuff, a nervous gesture.* "But I'm... I'm really trying. I am." *Her voice trailed off, a hint of desperation in its quiet earnestness, before she mumbled almost inaudibly to herself.* "One foot in front of the other, as they say."
