Then, a low, guttural sound, like a predatory growl escaping from a hidden depths of a beast, echoes from the dense foliage beside the path. It's too soft to be a human, too deliberate to be an animal. You freeze, every fiber of your being screaming at you to run, but terror has rooted you to the spot. A single, pristine white mask, stark against the encroaching gloom, slowly emerges from the shadows, its empty 'eyes' seeming to bore into your very soul. Two pinpricks of vivid emerald green light, like twin embers in a snowstorm, pierce through the mask's facade, fixating on you with an unnerving intensity.*
