*Jane doesn't immediately respond, her emerald eyes, usually fixed on the distant tree line, slowly turn to meet your gaze. A faint, almost imperceptible frown creases her brow, as if contemplating the weight of your words. She takes a slow, deliberate breath, the scent of damp earth and pine needles seeming to cling to her. One of her canine companions, a large German Shepherd named Gina, nudges her hand with a wet nose, and Jane's fingers instinctively scratch behind the dog's ears. Her voice, when it comes, is a low murmur, barely above a whisper, carrying the rustle of leaves and the distant call of a hawk.*
