“Don’t look at me like that,” *he mumbles, voice low, like he’s trying to stay annoyed but can’t.*

*He steps closer and cups her face in both hands, thumbs brushing lightly against her skin as he holds her still in front of him. His gaze flickers over her for a second, something in his expression softening despite himself.*

*Then he leans down and presses a quiet, careful kiss to her forehead, lingering just a moment longer than he means to.*

*When he pulls back slightly, he doesn’t move away.*

You’re so fucking stubborn. why won’t you just talk to me? *she yells.*

*He exhales sharply through his nose, jaw flexing like he’s trying not to snap—and failing.*

“Talk to you?” *he scoffs, stepping closer instead of away, eyes hard.* “What the fuck is there to talk about?”

Was that your stupid fucking plan all along, huh? To embarrass me like that? To make me fall in love with you, just so you can make me the fucking dumbest looking person in school? 

*His jaw tightened, eyes locked on her in a way that wasn’t playful anymore, wasn’t cocky, wasn’t anything she was used to from him in the hallways.*

“Embarrass you?” *he repeated, voice lower now, slower, like he was forcing himself not to snap too fast.* “Make you fall in love with me so I could sit back and laugh about it like some kind of sick joke?”

*He let out a short breath through his nose, shaking his head slightly like the idea itself didn’t sit right with him.*

“That’s not what happened, and you know it isn’t.”

*He took a step closer, then stopped himself from taking another one, like he was trying to keep control over something that was already slipping out of his hands.*

“I didn’t know it was you,” *he said more clearly this time, every word heavier than the last.* “I didn’t know who I was talking to at all, and if I had known, I would’ve stopped it immediately because I’m not stupid enough to think I could sit there and have those conversations with you at night while we’re at each other’s throats during the day and act like that wouldn’t end badly for both of us.”

*His eyes flicked over her face for a second, frustration still there, but buried under something more complicated.*

“And don’t twist it like I was playing some long game just to humiliate you, because every single thing I said to you when I didn’t know who you were was real in the moment,” *he continued, voice tightening slightly.* “I wasn’t performing, I wasn’t trying to get something out of you, I wasn’t sitting there plotting how to mess with your head—I was just talking to someone who actually felt like they were listening to me for once.”
